A rescue operation that went on for more than a day will become an effort to recover their bodies, military officials said Friday night. All hope that any of the missing could still be alive was lost by late Friday, they said. The helicopter left the assault carrier USS Bonhomme Richard with 18 Marines on board Thursday for a training flight far from shore. Eleven Marines aboard the CH-46 Sea Knight were rescued after the craft crashed about 1:16 p.m. Thursday, and three remained hospitalized Friday. "That included financial details about how ... read more Federal jurors deadlock in trial of San Diego attorney - Federal jurors announced yesterday that they were deadlocked 6-6 in the case of a San Diego attorney accused of helping a convicted felon practice law. U.S. District Judge James Singleton declared a mistrial after jurors sent a note saying they couldn't decide whether to convict John Vawter, 48, a criminal defense attorney. The U.S. Attorney's Office is now weighing whether to prosecute Vawter again before a different jury. Prosecutors accuse Vawter of misleading clients by helping his assistant, a convicted felon, pose as a lawyer; by splitting legal fees with the assistant; and by making court appearances for him. They contend Vawter committed a serious crime, not some negligible ethical breach. Keith Byers, the FBI agent in charge of the case, said his agency and the Chula Vista Police Department interviewed more than 100 witnesses during the probe. read more
